Background: Not much is known about Jet’s past. All that’s specified is that he watched his village, along with his parents, burn during a Fire Nation raid. A group known as the Rough Rhinos is shown to be the cause of the brutal attack and this is what ultimately triggers his hatred for the Fire Nation. It makes him a more complex character to understand, as his hate and vengeance seem to be his initial drive in the series-- to the degree they become very unhealthy and obsessive.
The first time we see Jet in action, it is specified that h is the leader of a group of Fire Nation rebels, the ‘Freedom Fighters’. They’re a group of kids who have been left with nothing at fault of the Fire Nation, and so they plot against them however Jet instructs them to. When he meets Aang and the others, he and some of his group had been waiting a majority of the day to attack a group of Fire Nation soldiers that had set up camp in their forest. With Aang, Katara and Sokka as a distraction, he and the others attack and ultimately defeat the group of about twenty men, Jet taking most of them out on his own. Jet then instructs them on what to take back from the camp and tells Katara that if they’re interested, they can come to. From the start, Sokka is the only one who doesn’t trust him.
When they get back, Jet hosts a feast, giving a toast to the accomplishments of the day. Everyone, in turn, cheers him on and he starts a conversation with Katara – who obviously has a crush on him. He praises her and Aang for their work and asks for their help on a future task and to this, Sokka claims they’re leaving…until Jet says he needs Sokka for an important mission. The next day they go out and wait in the trees for someone to come. Soon enough an elderly old man passes through, and Jet would have ended up almost brutally attacking him, had it not been for Sokka. He them explains to Katara that there was a knife filled with poison, and clearly the old man was sent to assassinate him – which only emphasizes his paranoia. Its clear Jet planted the knife, but Katara refuses to believe it and so they stay even longer.
When Sokka figures out Jet’s plan to wipe out the village by breaking the dam (by the means of spying) , Jet has him taken away by Smellerbee and Pipsqueak. He then asks Katara and Aang to bend the water into the river, but doesn’t explain that he’s going to break the dam. By the time they figure it out its too late and Jet breaks out into a battle with Aang. The results end up being Katara freezing him to a tree, but he’s still able to make the bird call and initiate the dam being blown up. Sokka then comes back with Appa and lets them know he warned the village and got it evacuated. Hesitantly, Katara leaves with the others and Jet’s still frozen to the tree.
We don’t see Jet again until well over a season passes. By now he’s a refugee in Ba Sing Se, starting a new life with only Longshot and Smellerbee. He runs into Zuko on the boat ride over to the city, who now goes under the alias ‘Lee’. Together, Zuko and Jet manage to steal good food for themselves and others left with scraps to eat, and when they dock Jet even asks him if he’d like to join the Freedom Fighters. Zuko declines and it’s then that Jet witnesses Iroh heating up his tea through discrete firebending. This starts his obsession all over again – where he goes as far as to stalk the pair in hopes of catching evidence that will prove to the public they’re firebenders.
Smellerbee and Longshot both grow concerned with Jet and say he’s going back to his old ways. They want to start fresh and get him away from the situation he’s creating for himself but he refuses and ends up walking straight into the teashop where Zuko and Iroh work, swords drawn, ready to force them into firebending. The two end up on street fighting with dual swords until Jet gets dragged away, arrested for harassing the two and damaging the tea shop.
However, he’s taken under Lake Laogi, where a Dai Li soldier proceeds to hypnotize him. He repeats that the war doesn’t exist within the city walls and circulating a glowing orb around to execute the hypnosis. The words that trigger him to be a fighting zombie-like being are “The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogi”, though this isn’t clarified until later.
After being hypnotized, all Jet’s memories that are associated with the war seem to have been cleared. He is, however, still able to remember Aang, Katara, Sokka and Appa, and even seeks them out to help find Appa. This is around the point he is taken from
