Background/Personality: She’s not very eloquent with her words… as she just spits out whatever comes to mind, she has no use for thinking over her words -- unless it is a situation where she absolutely needs to convey how serious she is and beating the crap out of someone isn't enough, but even then she has to say what just comes to her head -- just with a tiny more bit of thinking involved. You could even say she’s extremely inarticulate, a good case of a 'foot-in-mouth' type speaker -- having to force herself to say what she actually means than what comes to her head. She has extreme problems trying to get the right meaning to whatever she says. She stumbles through words awkwardly, she's never sure on how to say what she actually means to anyone. It bothers her a lot -- as she would love to get what she's feeling out, though it comes off as stammering and mixed up to those who hear her. There are few people who actually can get the true meaning out of her words -- Shinji, for one -- and understand that it's hard for her to get those emotions out without going off in a completely different direction when the conversation gets to hard for her to continue.
As a Shinigami, she was trained at Shino Academy in Seireitei. Otherwise, very little. She doesn't put a lot of stock into the traditional method of education, preferring to feel her way through everything instead of sticking her nose to a book.
Hiyori is definitely street smart, she isn't the type to sit around and read books when there is fights just begging to be picked. She knows it too, she prefers leaving the thinking to those who actually have the patience to it, or even just Shinji, but she is able to predict others movements when she's watching them fight. You could say she just reacts to the situation, even if her response leads to something bad for herself. She has a fight-or-fight type reaction to everything, there is no 'flight' about her. A very huge case of this would once again be just before the point where she was cut in half, where she simply reacted and rose to the bait that Aizen was setting out for her. The fact of the matter is, that if there is something annoying her, she will react or if there is something that needs to be done, she'll do it. She won't think about it, she'll just get it over and done with no matter the consequence.
Hiyori most definitely thinks with her gut, if it feels right, she does it. She has no particular fighting style because of it, her swords-play could almost be considered a swordsman's version of "Drunken Kung-Fu". However, she prefers to think with her gut -- to react without thinking, thinking, in her head, would only complicate situations more than they already are, thus she forgoes the thoughts and simply jumps right into the action. She is definitely more practical than idealistic, knowing how the world works and that she firmly believes that 'Nothing can last forever' -- that's the practical part of her. Though her idea of practicality is much different than say, a normal persons. Where they might think things through -- Hiyori will cut to the end of the chase and just react, as she finds this is the best way of getting what she wants and/or needs.
She is an introvert in the way that she's socially awkward, unable to voice how she feels and comes off as extremely untouchable, however, she's a extrovert in the way that she has no problems beating the crap out of anyone and is overly loud and obnoxious.
She is extremely angry all the time. Some may argue that it's the only feeling she might be able to hold on to beyond fleeting happiness and depression. Her rage lingers on the flick of a switch, it's violent and she is not above using underhanded tactics to enact such rage upon whoever sparked it on her. She doesn't trust easy, she never has. As a result of it, she treats everyone disrespectfully, (though she expect respect back towards herself) a trait that she finds reflected in Ichigo (And is extremely jealous of everything about him).
She reacts with complete and utter suspicion towards new people, unable to get it through her head that possibly they might want to be her friend in any possible way. She is often critical of those she first meets, telling Orihime and Chad that while she was jealous of the meaning of their names, she would have to ill them because the conversation was becoming pointless. Her anger helps fuel the fact that she finds herself so unlikeable that she cannot comprehend why others would even want to get close enough to her to get to now her. It should be pointed out that she views every new person as an enemy at first… though no one but Aizen and his crew are on the levels of a completely different tier of enemy.
She has a thing about reacting… she will react to everything you do, so much so that sometimes you can't be sure if it's just not an 'act' instead of a 'react'. She is extremely unable do much else than just that -- if she is teased, baited or anything of the sort; she simply will react. There is nothing there showing otherwise and as such, it's why she was bifurcated by Gin due to allowing Aizen to crawl under her skin and burrow himself there like a tick and poke every button for just what he craved -- It's a extreme weakness of hers, as she puts everyone, not just herself; in danger and forces those around her to pick up the pieces. She admits that she was out right impatient as her "last" words to Shinji in the fight with Aizen and is clearly aware that this is one of her huge faults.
Hiyori will always fight. She believes that the best defense, is a flawless offense. As such, if you challenge her, she will do everything in her power to defeat you and shove it in your face (and then kill you, if you're an enemy, of course). She takes her fights very seriously, often seeing the option of bloodshed more appealing than running away and regrouping -- Again, she knows this, as she admits to Shinji she was sorry for reacting to the taunts of Aizen and being severely hurt. However, one could argue that this is one of her defining traits -- To the point of it being a shining quality, as she will never back down, no matter the odds, even if she loses. Some may admire her for that sort of strength, while others could call her arrogant and cocky for believing that running isn't in her code of honor.
She has a strange sense of humor, one that is rarely seen as "nice" in anyway. She will resort of pranks for no other reason than someone ate her goddamned pudding (She has more than once replaced all the shampoo in the warehouse with glue, glued all of Shinji's furniture to the ceiling, replaced his Jazz LPs with children's ones). However, when it comes to teasing from Shinji/anyone, she can dish it out but simply cannot take it. At all. Ever.
Some wonder if Hiyori has a mental problem and I respond with that if her anger is a mental disorder, yes, she does. And she deals with it via taking it out during training or fights with everyone and anyone.
She has many moments in her life that have defined Hiyori as a person, some could be when she realized that Urahara was staying as her captain and she learnt to trust him, becoming an visored -- or even getting bifurcated. They all help shape her as a person and help her trust people a little more -- especially Shinji.
You could ask “what does she fear?” And I could reply with many things… A big one would be never being able to fight again, this is the biggest fear as she never feels better than when she's fighting someone seriously -- the blood-lust that fills her makes her remember that while she isn't a part of her old family any more -- she still has the other Visoreds, Urahara+co and now Ichigo. She wants to be able to protect them -- though more often than not she finds Shinji protecting her.
It's very clear that losing Shinji/her other family is another fear -- she reacted badly to them all being called dead, in my opinion, wasn't because she was targeted, she reacted because her family was anything but dead. They all lived, breathed, they all were so jovial -- She finds herself jealous of it more often than not, but she would rather die than have them insulted in front of her.
Shinji, she fears him in a very weird way, not in the way that is most common with being 'attributed' to the word, but in the way that she finds it unsettling that he reads her so well, he knows her inside out and sometimes even what she's thinking. It unnerves her when he pretends to be speaking to everyone, but every word he says is directed right at her. She fears him because she doesn't know what she'd do without him.
Hiyori doesn’t have many hopes or aspirations beyond getting revenge on Aizen for having the Visoreds ostracized from Soul Society…. One could argue that beyond the need to get stronger and stronger and not doing much else than that that she floats along at this point.
There are a few things that Hiyori doesn't want anyone to find out about her. That she's a romantic -- She's never been kissed, at all. She wants her first kiss to be with the person she loves and she doesn't want anyone to know due to the extreme teasing that Shinji, Love and anyone else would give her for it. She wouldn't be able to stand it if someone she didn't love tried to steal it from her, even to the point of reacting with almost killing them.
During the 50 years she spent apart from the other visoreds, she was alone, she worked at seedy bars, etc, but when she had the time to herself, she would sit out on a hill near by and stare at the stars, she made constellations from all over the place, all creating a intricate story that she doesn't know if anyone would even care to hear -- and no one's asked why she sometimes sits on the top of the warehouse at night and just looks at those stars either. They don't ask, she doesn't tell.
She doesn't remember her biological parents, but her former Taicho, Hikifune; was the closest she's had. She treated the woman with respect that no one else would ever get. She refuses to treat anyone else on that same level, though she does 'respect' other people in some vague way.
On Hiyori’s part, when she was the Fukutaicho of the 12th Division, losing her previous captain who she saw as a mother, she gained Urahara, the previous third seat of the second division; as her new Captain. It should be said that Hiyori hated Urahara on sight, she didn’t care who he was at all, she only saw him as an intruder, showing her extreme distrust of those who almost intrude on the family she has -- new people in general even. Though, she does come to trust him when he saves her in the Maggots Nest and even more-so when Urahara saves her and the rest of the Vizards/Visoreds from execution after Aizen’s actions start the hollowification on them and end up defected due to it. It only cements that she can and will learn to trust -- that it is possible to join her small circle of ‘family’.
Some could argue that all of the Visoreds are siblings and that Hiyori will kick the crap out of them for nothing less than them being stupid in her eyes, but she loves them all. She would lay her life on the ground for them and protect them when they need it -- Otherwise, she does not have any siblings.
The people who Hiyori has considered family have grown exponentially! Urahara and Co, The Visoreds and the umbrella's been sprung out to even cover Ichigo. Considering at first, her only “family” would have been Hikifune (her previous captain) and those of the 12th Division, not to mention Shinji. It grew and then shrunk -- leaving her very unwilling to trust again.
With Urahara and Co she has a strange relationship there, she runs there when she's angry and needs a place to hide out from the rest of the Visoreds, finding Yoruichi somewhat pleasing to talk to -- and almost finding Urahara's familiarity with how she works comforting.
With most of the other visoreds, she treats them like they're her brothers and sisters, she would protect them and they would protect her, she would gladly lay her life down for them.
Shinji, however -- is a harder case to describe. They tease and fight each other, though they both are considered to have a 'schoolyard-romance' by the rest of the others in some ways. She does believe at some points, that it's them against the world; that they will have each other's back no matter what happens between them. I am unsure if she even knows what to call her feelings towards Shinji, possibly due to never knowing what love exactly was supposed to feel like, but she knows that the other is her best friend and she would rather protect him and be killed than have it the other way around. She trusts him more than anyone else in the world.
Ichigo; it is a very weird relationship between them -- she sees so many parallels between them both, though the way he handles everyone, or the way everyone loves him drives her insane with envy. She's jealous of them and the way he can be so forwards with her words, while she simply stumbles along -- but he's a visored, so she considers him her brother by default.
Hirako Shinji is definitely this girl's bestfriend, it's unclear how they met each other, but they did know each other before BTP arc in Bleach. It's shown that they care so much about each other -- one could say so easily that the only reason Shinji came was because Hiyori was out there. The rest of the Visored are her friends, yes and while she trusts them and they trust her, they are not on the same level as Shinji to her.
She can't make friends at all, she's jealous of those who can. It's partly because of how she views herself, finding herself nothing more than a crass monkey that is completely unlikable and violent; that she simply assumes that no one would want to get close to her. It doesn't help that she has trust issues and is very suspicious of those who do try to get close to her, seeing it as some sort of cruel joke that she somehow managed to warrant for herself.
To Hiyori, friends are below family. Above everything, there is family. She would die for her family, to protect them or their honor. This is shown in the fight with Aizen to an extreme point.
Hiyori sees marriage as something she wants and views cheating as a down right stupid move, to her, if she was married and loved her spouse, then why would she even look at anyone else? Marriage is sacred to her, as is kissing and dating, she only wants to get married once and to the person who would stay with her forever. Hiyori has very romanticized views on sex, as well… She feels that it should be between two adults that love each other enough to know that they'll be together for a good long time. She's a virgin and waiting for just that -- hell, she's never ever been kissed. Yet, that isn't to say that she's never gotten off by her own ministrations, she is a woman with urges and she does give into them sometimes.
She doesn't believe she's ever crushed on anyone, however… Though onlookers might say that Shinji has been her first and only crush... yet, to her, as someone that has no idea what it's supposed to feel like, she would assume that what she feels for Shinji is nothing short of normal for two as close as them.
