2013 App Page

Copy and answer the form below to get started, then comment to this very same post!

Yup! That's it! Any specifications are explained below, and any other questions can be sent here and a mod will answer them as soon as possible! :D Just remember this: We're a very chill bunch! Don't worry about overly impressing us! If we need something extra, we'll give you until the following Saturday to get the revisions in.

Speaking of which! APPS WILL BE ACCEPTED EVERY OTHER SATURDAY. Keep in mind, though... the mods tend to get distracted very easily by things like video games, books and anything remotely shiny-- if there's a foreseeable distraction, or if something happens in our lives that really bogs us down, we'll give a notice to anyone who's applied and mark a note on the user page. We don't expect this to happen on a regular basis. But. Aheh.

Anyway, on to the app! Make sure you read the explanation for each section, and you'll find the form complete with html in a textbox below.

Examples of previous apps can be found here, here, here, here, and here.

And make sure you get your app in by midnight EST on Saturday (or 11:59:59 PM EST Friday) or you'll have to wait until the next round.

Applications are currently CLOSED pending changes to the game structure that can be read about in its first iteration HERE

IC:

Character name: Inspector Gadget
Fandom: Inspector Gadget
Timeline: After episode 65, between seasons 1 and 2
Age: Canon age is unknown, seems to be late 30's/early 40's. Headcanon age is 41.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:

Without even going into his gadgets, there are Gadget's nigh-invulnerability and incredible luck to contend with. He is almost impossible to kill through violent means, shrugging off things such as falling off the Empire State Building (leaving a crater five feet deep) and even bisection; his main weakness seems to be electric shocks, and even that earned him only a short stay at the hospital. As for luck, it's saved his life many times; he's the sort of person who would bend down to pick up a penny just as a hidden sniper takes a shot at him, causing them to miss without even knowing they're there.

In addition, Gadget has a number of machines inside his body. As well as lending him superhuman strength (he's capable of supporting a moving train on his back), he has a variety of tools (laser, flashlight, screwdriver, roller skates, helicopter, and so on) inside his hat, feet, and fingertips, as well as having extendable arms, legs, and neck. He also has a set of handcuffs inside each wrist.

Going into mundane abilities, Gadget is a good marksman when he's actually purposely shooting at something. He's good at growing plants and more often than not is good with electronic or engineering-type things, as long as he's actually concentrating on what he's doing. (It's very inconsistent in canon, but he's good with electronics or machines more often than he's bad with them.)

How would they use their abilities?: He's a good guy; he'll try his best to help people.

Appearance: Gadget is tall and athletic, broad-shouldered and long-legged without being too bulky. His skintone is fair but unremarkable, with lines under his eyes and slight crow's feet. His eyes are gold, and his shoulder-length black hair appears shorter due to being so spiky that it resembles a pair of wings coming out the back of his head. He usually wears a grey trenchcoat and fedora, and always appears to be wearing what looks like a set of brown leather gloves. His face is long, with a strong chin, oddly-shaped ears, and the most awesome nose ever.

Background: Not much is known about Gadget's background. At some point during his early career as a cop, he was in a horrible accident (involving, at the very least, a banana peel and falling thirteen stories) while chasing down a criminal; the damage to his body was so severe that Professor Von Slickstein, the father of modern bionics (cybernetics, actually, but it's called bionics in the show), decided to replace what had been lost with machinery (along with a few extra tools to help him do policework better).

During the series, Gadget's chief enemy is the international crime organization known as M.A.D.; their exploits range from kidnapping to theft to terrorism, led by a mysterious figure known as Dr. Claw. He does handle more traditional policework from time to time, but the majority of the show is his clash with M.A.D. He is shown to be incompetent, saved only by his own luck and the efforts of his niece and dog. The rivalry between Gadget and M.A.D. seems to be personal, given the way Gadget and Dr. Claw talk about each other.

Also important is Gadget's family. He did have one at one point, but now his only living family member is his ten-year-old niece, Penny. He takes care of her and raises her like a father would, and is effectively a single parent. He also has a doggy named Brain, who is capable of walking on two legs, holding things in his paws, and other people-like things. Penny and Brain are more competent than Gadget and follow him on his cases, secretly helping him and letting him take the credit for solving the case.

Personality: An important thing to remember about Gadget: He is incompetent and foolish, but not unintelligent. His vocabulary, language skills, and math skills are all fine. In fact, when he's actually concentrating on what he's doing, he usually shows a deep understanding of machines, electronics, and even his own cybernetics (along with other "hard" sciences) that someone of lesser intelligence would not be able to muster. What, then, makes him incompetent? A complete lack of street smarts, along with his inability to observe, judge character, or apply the intelligence and knowledge he does have to the "real world". For example, he thinks that a scientist that wants to see into a lake is in a tree, because trees are high and you can see from high places ("Monster Lake"). Good Intelligence, abysmal Wisdom.

Instead of being guided by his brains, he is guided by his emotions. His greatest passion is crime-fighting, and it shows in the zeal he displays whenever he spots whatever he thinks is a criminal. Although he does like to think things through when he can, his trains of thought go nowhere useful and he ends up being driven by impulse in the end. This isn't to say he's short-tempered or has no emotional control, though; in fact, the opposite is true. Gadget is one of the most even-tempered people you'll ever meet. He doesn't get angry or upset without a good reason, and even then, he doesn't let it impede his judgement or govern his actions; if accidents happen, it's because he's clumsy, not because he lost his temper. And although he's normally bad at decieving people, he can be surprisingly stoic when he's sad or upset. He won't show his negative emotions in front of people for long, putting on a fake air of cheerfulness indistinguishable from his usual joie de vivre to people who don't know him well, and will only feel sorry for himself when he's alone or with people he trusts. (This is best shown in the episode "Gadget's Replacement".)

Helping to make up for Gadget's incompetence is a big heart. He's very friendly and honestly cares about others -- when actually lucid, he is polite and even thoughtlessly kind to friends and strangers alike. He will go out of his way to help someone, even when in the middle of the case; when someone's upset, he'll cheer them up. On one occasion, he even went so far as to give his recent birthday present to a complete stranger, just to try and cheer them up ("King Wrong"). This universal compassion extends even to criminals, people who on all accounts should be his enemy. He says he has "no sympathy for lawbreakers" ("The Pharaoh"), but his actions speak differently, as when he is escorting a criminal he treats him well, and goes to get him ice when he bumps his head ("The Quimby Exchange"). He expects similar behavior from others, though; common courtesy, at the very least. He thinks everyone is as harmless and good-willed as he is unless he has reason to suspect otherwise, and from this stems his inability to distinguish friend from foe.

His care for other people goes doubly so for family and close friends (which are pretty much emotional equivalents to him). He frequently engages in subtle displays of affection toward them, such as an arm around the shoulders. And when he actually manages to notice that someone he cares about is in danger, he's quick to come to their rescue and his mental competence increases dramatically until they're safe.

Relating to his background, Gadget has yet to accept the full reality of being a cyborg, although he's been one for years. It's clear that he does not think of his gadgets as part of him, considering them to simply be tools that he can never lose because they happen to be attached to him. One of the best ways to piss him off is to equate him to a machine. ("Gadget's Replacement")

Finally, many successful cases (that were usually caused by his niece, not him) have caused Gadget to have a bit of an ego. He means no harm by it, but he still has an inflated sense of his own competence and abilities, and sometimes boasts or brags.

1st person sample: (Recycled from an app for another game)

It's been a lot of fun watching you all film your horror movie, but now if you could direct me toward the nearest bus station, I'd appreciate it. I need to get back to Metro City! I'm used to my gadgets malfunctioning, but this is ridiculous. They haven't even responded since I got here! I need to get them fixed. Not to mention my niece is waiting for me; I never told her I would be away from home this long, she'll be worried sick!

Oh, I have one last thing to do before I head back. Has anyone lost a little computer? [Referring to the communicator.] This looks expensive, I'm sure they're missing it.

3rd person sample: (Recycled from an app for another game)

As Gadget woke up, he quickly realized he was not in his bed at home; from the looks of it, he wasn't even in Metro City. It hadn't been the first time he'd woken up and not known where he was, but he was always on assignment when that happened; he didn't remember being on assignment now. He got to his feet, looking around and briefly wondering why his hat, not to mention his body, felt so heavy; usually, he didn't even notice the weight of his gadgets. Taking into account his strange surroundings and the way he felt, he came to a quick conclusion.

"I've been kidnapped by M.A.D.!" So what was the ruined city act for -- to scare him? Maybe they were trying to make him think he'd slept through the end of the world. Well, they'd made a mistake in not tying him up -- he'd capture them all in short order and find his way back to Metro City. As he took a step forward, a small beep from beneath his foot caught his attention; he moved his foot back and crouched down to take a look.

Judging by the screen and the number of buttons, it was a handheld computer. "Dropped by a M.A.D. agent, no doubt. I'll just take this as evidence."

He picked the little computer up and tucked it into an inside pocket of his trenchcoat, continuing to look around. Well, he'd get the best view from the sky, wouldn't he?

"Go go gadget 'copter!" Expecting the familiar sound of the blades extending from his hat, he glanced up in surprise and confusion at the silence. "I said, go go gadget 'copter!" Nothing. "Fine. Go go gadget legs!" Still nothing. He was beginning to become worried. Sure, his gadgets malfunctioned all the time, but now they weren't even responding. He glanced down at his coat and grasped a specific button, tugging on it. The special string it was attached to extended out, but... nothing happened. "Go go gadget coat! Go go gadget coat! ...Go go gadget anything! Please!"

So that was why M.A.D. hadn't bothered restraining him. They'd found a way to disable his gadgets -- they probably thought he was helpless. He'd just have to prove them wrong; with no choice but to press on, he continued to walk forward, hoping he'd find some answers soon.

Questions?: Nope.
Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Yup :3
