As much as we'd love it if everyone got along and played nicely, we know there are times when personalities and ideas clash. If you're having a problem with another player that you've been unable to resolve on your own, or have a problem that seems to be developing, please IM one of us. We are more than happy to mediate and act as impartial go-betweens to help players work through issues and solve problems.

×List Management
There's rather a lot of information being shuffled around on a lot of different pages on a pretty daily basis - if you notice a mistake (someone's been listed twice on the Rooms List, the Taken Characters page still lists characters who have dropped ages ago, a character's name is misspelled or the incorrect journal is displayed, etc), the easiest way to let us know is actually by commenting directly to the page in question.

This is the default duty of the mod helper. Please see the above description for a full explanation.

×Emergency shut-off
When a civil conversation between players is threatening to turn into an uncivil argument and there are no moderators around, the mod helpers are authorized to freeze threads in the interest of keeping the argument from escalating until a moderator is able to step in. If you try to argue with them about it, the mods will be less inclined to be sympathetic towards you when they take over. Fair warning.

×Fellow players
It ought to go without saying that the mod helpers are, first and foremost, players. However, because this is the internet, it doesn't. They have just as much right to express their opinions, comment on or debate, discuss, agree or disagree with anything that's posted or mentioned. If you have a disagreement with one of them, you are not disagreeing with a moderator or with someone who is expressing a moderator's opinion, you are disagreeing with a peer and fellow player.

I'm planning on apping a character that has the same name as two other current characters. I'm wondering how the tags would work?

The character in question is Ashura, the deceased father of the character whose journal is

300goingonto13, and the AU version of

wishmadeinfire's father.

For character tags, something along the lines of Ashura(AU) would suffice!

So I have a question that's sort of...skirted over but not directly answered in the promotions/rooming page. It says you need a set number of months in a room saving up money at a set wage to upgrade, depending on how much your character spends...but what if they've gone all the way up to CEO wage in the Stowaway's room, with almost zero expenditure up to that point? Could they outright afford a bigger jump, or is it a paperwork thing so they couldn't jump?

And if it's a paperwork thing could their free upgrade stack or would they still have to wait after using it? (Honestly just curious about it at this point)

If your character has been chilling in the Stowaways and saving up their CEO level wage, then it's totally cool if you want to jump them several room upgrades at once - just be sure to mention that your character has been stockpiling their CEO wages for however long when posting the upgrade request. :)

I have been planning to app a Pokemon OC, but have noticed that the rules and FAQ contain conflicting information about fandom OCs. The rules state "We can't accept OCs from an already existing series", whilst the FAQ says "On a case by case basis we may accept fandom OCs, based on their role in that particular universe". I heard from one of your players that there are in fact fandom OCs in the game, but for my own peace of mind I wanted to double check that it would be okay to app.

Hey-o!

We'll accept fandom OCs depending on how much interaction they have with canon characters. If (for example) an OC is BFFs with ALL THE GYM LEADERS and has pounded the Pokemon League and is BFFs with all of them too, then we're not going to accept it, because it puts the players of the gym leaders and the Pokemon League in an awkward position.

On the other hand, if a fandom OC is from a quiet little town somewhere, has maybe earned some gym badges but not had interaction with the gym leaders beyond that, then that is a character we can consider.

Basically, if a player's headcanon for their OCs requires potential castmates to be familiar with it before they can interact, then we won't accept the app.

Neither of the OCs I'm trying to decide between has any prominent relationships with the canon characters, so there shouldn't be a problem there. Both are members of one of the antagonist teams (Magma and Rocket respectively) so they are familiar with their canon leaders and superiors and may have interacted with them, but their superiors wouldn't recognise them in return (hooray, nameless henchmen) — I assume this is okay?

Canon is the set of rules or principles regarding a certain work; for our purposes, a canon is a work of media, for example the Harry Potter series, the Batman comics, the Die Hard movies, Dragon Ball Z, etc. If you are asking about the question of timeline on the application, it would mean where in the character's series the applicant plans on taking the character from.

Headcanon are rules that aren't strictly canon, but created by the applicant. For instance, while it's canon that Harry Potter's godfather's name is Sirius, if I were to say Sirius's middle name was Antares, that would be my personal headcanon!

I'm considering apping Shizune to a game. I believe you've mentioned earlier that the Babelfish only works for spoken communication, while the Guide has a translator function for text.

Shizune happens to be completely deaf. Would a babelfish be of any use to her? Also, does the Guide have a closed-captioning option for voice or video posts?

If she's completely deaf, then the babelfish wouldn't be of any use to her at all. On the other hand, the Guide does indeed have closed-captioning available for voice and video posts. She can even use that function when interacting with other characters face-to-face, if she needs to. :)

So does closed-captioning work with the same sort of translation device?

That's right!

I have a question regarding permanent jobs. Say I wanted to give Rise one now, which as per current rules would have to be at minimum wage. Would she be eligible for promotion within that permanent mission as she passes the milestones (so 5 months for SD, 8 for CD etc) and how would I go about doing that? Would I have to re-comment to the permanent jobs list or could I just do it through the usual promotions post and just add a note at the bottom to say "permanent job: new level"?

Once you've got her signed on for a permanent mission, she'll be eligible for pay increases as usual (unless you decide her bosses hate her or something), so one month of working her permanent job at Minimum before she can get up to Somewhat Decent, then three months working Somewhat Decent, and so on. You would continue to apply for pay increases as usual in the monthly promotions/upgrades posts. No need to mention she's working a permanent mission, unless you would like to!

Ooh, okay. So does that leave her still eligible for temporary missions at whatever wage level? (Shouldn't be a problem after the first month when she'll be at Somewhat Decent for both and I can just promote once she qualifies in both I guess?)

Yup! If she's worked enough temp missions to earn a promotion in them, she can pick up a Somewhat Decent mission in addition to her Min Wage permanent job, if you'd like to do that.

Got it! She's at Somewhat Decent now so I'll try and pull the two into line so she's eventually at one level for the both - do you need any further comment then before I bump her to College Degree (in...however many months that'll be) or do I need to comment somewhere before that to note her permanent is up to SD?

(Sorry for all the questions! This would be so much easier had she not hated her second mission here!)

Not really! It sounds like you've got this pretty well thought out. If you're planning to have her continue to work temporary missions in addition to her permanent job, it would probably cause less confusion to keep her information on the room list updated with what she's earning on the temporary mission level. So if she comes up for a promotion to College Degree in her temp missions but is still only making Somewhat Decent in her permanent one, comment to the wage promotion post with the increase to her College Degree, so that there's no question when she signs up for those monthly missions. She'll still be earning Somewhat Decent at her permanent job, but you'll be aware of that, so it's not a big deal. :)

All right, that makes sense. I record pretty much everything anyway so it'll be simple enough to keep track of her permanent wage separately, upgrade where necessary but (for now at least) keep her "official" wage in line with her temp wage.

So I was recently shown this game and I'm quite intrigued by it but I had a quick question in regards to characters that we're allowed to take.

I know a lot of games are kind of against allowing Transformers characters in but if someone wanted to app one, would they be allowed to? And, if so, are there any restrictions to take into consideration?

We've had a few Transformers characters in-game in the past. The very large robots may be ICly restricted by their size to certain areas of the Thor, but other than that, we don't have any restrictions on applying from that canon. :)

Well...as of this thread, Flandre is going to be out for destruction. How do you guys want me to handle this? I am planning on putting up a post in the OOC comm to let others know what is going on and if they want her to destroy/cause panic to them/where they are.

But I figured it'd be best to ask you first!

The game is kind of sort of dying, and I'm pretty sure you've guys noticed. Are there any plans for a revamp or anything? Or are we just letting it go quietly into the night?

Hey there! Yes, this is something we've noticed and have been discussing for many months. Rest assured, while our response to the issue has been quiet, it is not because we've been plugging our ears and hoping it will fix itself.

Losing players isn't necessarily a bad thing. While we've loved this game even at its largest, the mod team was actually looking forward to the prospect of a smaller game. Large games come with an exhausting amount of busywork and make it difficult for the mod team to maintain familiarity with the playerbase as a whole.

However, we had hoped that our player count would stabilize at some point, and at this moment we seem to still be dropping. To some extent, it feels out of our hands. Mostly Harmless was created to be player-driven, after all. If players lose their drive, less happens, making more players lose their drive. We've made some effort to bring fresh blood into the game to get things rolling again, as well as toying with the missions list format to inspire new ideas, but there has been limited success from this.

We haven't discussed the option of a full revamp of the game, possibly because we haven't had any ideas on how to do it without losing that free-form sandbox feel to the game we all love. The mod team may say this a lot, but if any players have any fresh, new ideas, we're always listening.

And if worse comes to worst, we could always turn the game into a musebox.

The 4th Wall got a lot of great attention. What about moving to Dressing Room mode?

That's also an option. However, the full mod team will need to sit down and discuss if we want to go for a change that drastic. If we feel we're at that point, then we'll talk with the players about whether they'd rather go for the musebox route or convert into an open dressing room.

Hi mods, just a question about activity. I was hiatused for a little more than two weeks, and I failed to notice that it was a network post required for activity. That sounds kind of oddly specific to me because I posted an open log for Dave's return. Does this mean I will need to post to the network to or will the log suffice?

Hey-o! You're right in that it's oddly specific - that's actually a carry-over from the way we used to do AC from quite a while ago. Currently a network OR log post is acceptable, as explained on the main AC page, so you don't have anything to worry about.

If you don't mind, could you link us to the place where it says "network post only," so we can change it? Sorry for the confusion!
